Press Release

The Art and Speech Laboratory of the Faculty of Primary Education of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens is organizing a three-day scholarly conference to take place in Athens between 22nd and 24th November 2013 at the Athens Music Conservatory. The conference is being held within the framework of the University’s programme “THALES” entitled “The Theatre as educational good and artistic expression in education and society”,  co-financed by the European Union (European Social Fund – ESF) and Greek national funds through the Operational Programme “Education and Lifelong Learning” of the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF). 

Greek and foreign scholars will be presenting papers concerned with various topics related to the subject of using art for teaching purposes in education, pedagogy and teaching practice of theatre, the theatre as resultant of all arts and generally the communicative role of the theatre as pedagogic means. Moreover, application workshops will be carried out, offering participants opportunities for familiarisation with the various forms of the theatre in Education, such as dramatisation, theatrical games and so on, as well as the theatre as teaching methodology.

The conference will be held under the scientific supervision and collaboration of the Primary Education Department of the Democritus University of Thrace, the Faculty of Education of the University of Crete, the Faculty of Primary Education of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens and the MA programme in Theatre Studies of the University of Cyprus.  Participants will receive certificates of attendance.

Categories longer available «popular» and «artistic» theater refer to two different cultural fields, Which are distinguished not only by Their primary aesthetical features, but Also by Their social roles as well as consequences. Each one of them Involves peculiar techniques and references, setting in space and time and strategies of communication, both among the artists and between them and the audience. Nevertheless, despite competition Involving an historical low and highbrow culture, the relationship between These two fields is valued as osmotic and complementary; mutual influences Have Been constituing an ever-shifing balance in Western theater (and culture) since its ritual origins. The author Eventually Exposes some examples in order to validate longer available as a methodologic approach in Western historical perspective Theatre Studies.

Having overcome long delays on account of bureaucracy, we are pleased to announce the official launch of programme Thales, entitled “The Theatre as educational good and artistic expression in education and society”. The event will take place on Sunday, October 21st at 19:00 at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation (Piraeus 206, Tavros).

At the event, apart from the official greetings, the programme parameters, research data and deliverables will be presented as well as the participating Greek and foreign researchers of all capacities and positions. Programme supervisor Professor Thodoros Grammatas and foreign guest scholars will give concise talks. The event will close with a short musical-theatrical performance.
